About the Schmidt Brewery
In 1900, the Jacob Schmidt Brewery opened on West 7th Street in St. Paul. It became a leading beer producer with 250 employees and an annual output of 200,000 barrels. Beer continued to brew for decades under different companies and labels, from Grain Belt to Pig’s Eye. Designed by Chicago architect Bernard Barthel, the brewery is an excellent example of turn of the century design. Described as “picturesque as a castle on the River Rhine,” it incorporates gothic décor and intricate brickwork into its towers, brew house and bottle house.
In 2002 the last beer was bottled. And in 2013 the old brewery gets a new life as the Schmidt Artist Lofts.

One of the most historic landmarks located along the Mississippi River, the Schmidt Brewery has been a part of Saint Paul’s history for more than 100 years. The revitalization of the brewery and West Seventh Street will bring great changes to the immediate area. Contact us today to become a part of the new creative community of artists in St. Paul!
